10 Things About Saipan
Since I often have Saipan, Northen Marianas Island in the forefront of my thinking lately, I wanted to share with you a quick list.
If you didn’t know….
- Saipan is 3/4 of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines
- The locals are called Chamorro not “Saipanese”
- Length? If you run from one side to the other…you ALMOST ran a 1/2 Marathon. It’s 12 miles long.
- Width? a little over than 8K
. It’s 5.6 miles. A marathoner is in no need of a car here. Kidding
- Is a commonwealth of the US. Kinda like Virginia except much much smaller.
- Located just east of the island is the deepest part of the earth’s ocean (the Mariana Trench).
- Saipan has a delegate in the US House of Representative but is a non-voting member.
- Is 2.5 the size of Washington DC..
- Played a role in the WW2 “Island Hopping” strategy.
- Chamorros make one of the best Chicken Wraps I ever tasted (Chicken Kilaguen).
