Homemade Baby Food: Sweet Potatoes
Hi! How are you?
Me. Much better now than when I wrote this.
This is what our life is like the past week and it shall remain so for the next two or three:
Some of the things goin’ on involves things and activities like running errands, boxes, baby food, sleepless nights, 8000 miles, and useless anti-itch creams (our girly has eczema ).
What?!..
Never mind.
As I was saying, I made my first baby food: Sweet Potatoes.
And Baby girl ate her first solid food(sorta; puree is more like liquid
).
I looked around online to find out how to prepare baby food. Some people boil fruits and vegetables, some use the baking method. I baked sweet potatoes.
Sorry I didn’t take pictures of the process.
Honestly, I wasn’t thinking about blogging it later on. Bur it turned out so well I thought I’d share it with you.
What I used:
- 2 Sweet Potatoes
- Mommy milk or Formula milk or distilled water
- Oven (for baking)
- Blender (with Puree option)
- Ice cube trays
- Storage Container (I used mommy’s milk storage bags)
What I did:
- Preheat oven to 350
- Wash potatoes thoroughly. Cut in half (long way). No need to peel (I read that baking sweet potato with the skin preserves the nutrients as oppose to peeling it or/and boiling)
- Put enough water just to cover the surface of a baking dish. Put cut potatoes flat (the flesh) side down.
- Bake for about 40 minutes (At least I think that’s how long I had it in…just check when it’s all mushy and soft. It’s done!)
- Once done, let cool for about 15 minutes and then peel. It comes off easily just use your hands.
- Cut into squares and put in the blender. Add about 2 once of milk / distilled water.
- Puree.
- Extra: To make sure there are no fibers or skin mixed in and not well blended, put sweet potato puree through a sieve. I didn’t have one .
- Put sweet potato puree in an ice cube container (mine fit in just one tray). Freeze.
- Once frozen, transfer into a container ( I use my Mommy’s Milk storage). Label with the day’s date. Freezer life is 3 months.
Tip: If you find it hard to get the cubes to come off the tray. Run the bottom of the tray through hot water for about a minute. And try again. Worked like magic for me.
NOTE: Since this is baby’s first time with food other than milk, we’re advised by the doc to keep it simple. Once veggie/fruit at a time. Feed her the same food for 4 days in a row before introducing a new veggie/fruit. This will help us know which food agrees with her and which ones she’ll be allergic to (hopefully not much).
You can put a cube (or however much you’re going to use) in a container and leave in the fridge overnight. The following day it should be thawed and ready to eat. OR you can zap it in the microwave for 15-30 seconds.
Daddy helped feed baby so I can take pictures of this monumental time
We wanted to see her verdict.
She’s looking at me as if to say, “Mama, should I?”
Still a little unsure
“Okay, maybe just a little taste..”
“Umm…
that
was
kinda…
let me try it
again…”
My child makes me laugh. This picture makes me laugh.
She thought
Daddy
needed
a little help…
Check out

The look of bewildered satisfaction. “I have no clue what that was. But I want some more!”
By the way, another “first” is my hubby’s first time feeding a baby (our baby).
He’s a sweetheart.
I am blessed.

Wow! She loves it…
Gustong gusto din yan ng baby ko, pro mix ko lagi ng konting veg. Chel, I hope you don’t mind me asking, my eczema ba baby mo? medyo mapula kasi cya, my baby has too. Take care and Happy Sunday!
Ay oo grabeh! I mentioned it on several posts. Pero it is getting better lately. We got prescription ointments for her. Whew! Eczema gets really bad too. As in hindi sya makatulog dahil sa kati. Pero Thank God, okey naman na ngayon because of medicine. Salamat, Lamielle!
Hi! My baby had an eczema before and I changed her lotion and soap. Now I’m using Avene TriXera+ Cream which is hypoallergenic and for very dry sensitive and atopic skin. For the soap I used Free and Clear. It work on my baby and maybe it will work on you too. It prevents me from using low-dose steroids cream and antihistamine. Hope this can help you too!
